Study Programme of Linguistics Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held “2021 Malang Graduate Student Webinar in Linguistics” on Friday (8/6/2021). This event was organized in collaboration with AIFIS (The American Institute for Indonesian Studies) which aims to be a forum for Linguistics Students in Malang to discuss with Linguistics Students outside Malang.
This event was divided into two sessions. The first session was held from 8 to 9.30 a.m., and the second session was held from 9.30 to 11.00 a.m. The speakers in this second session were Alifa Camilia Fadillah from UB, Naima Khairunisa from Malang State University, and Christian Edison Bani from UB.
Alifa Camilia Fadillah presented her topic entitled “Re-examining Indonesian English as Indonesian’s New Variety: A Corpus Study”. Alifa explained that the reason for the need for a re-examination of Indonesian-English as a new variety of Indonesian was because of the birth of various variations of English, the English world focused on the variants of the Inner and Outer Circles, and the contrast between the two research groups.
Naima Khairunisa presented her topic entitled “Space Lexicalization in English Language Students’ Narrative Writing”. She explained, “The Indonesian language describes the movement, direction, and location through main verbs, while English expresses them through prepositions, adverb particles, and phrasal verbs.”
Christian Edison Bani delivered his topic entitled “The Relationship between Parental Involvement and Vocabulary Achievement in an EFL Elementary Education Setting”. The discussion on Bani’s topic was about “Parental Involvement with Student Achievement, Parents’ Educational Background with Student Vocabulary Achievement, and Parental Involvement with Student Motivation”.
